PSG, in their last Ligue 1 match on Saturday, lost 6 players due to injury. 5 of these players will not play in the series against Chelsea, including Serge Aurier (highest-rated RB) and Lucas Moura (highest-rated player). That, combined with the fact that Chelsea has arguably the best home-field advantage in European soccer, means that the Blues from Stamford Bridge look prime to take this and advance. Look for a draw in Paris and a win for Chelsea in London.

Predictions: Chelsea 4-1 PSG

Shakhtar had a great run to get to this point, thanks to players like Luis Adriano putting in goals. However, Bayern is arguably the best team in the world and have been nearly unstoppable this entire season. A high-octane offense filled with superstars combined with a rock-solid defense anchored by the best keeper in the world means the engine will just keep rolling, both in and out of Munich.

Prediction: Shakhtar 0-5 Bayern

Klaas Jan Huntelaar comes back from a suspension for Schalke but adding the extra firepower won’t be enough to stop the machine that is Real Madrid. The best player in the world. One of the strongest midfields in the world. They will score plenty of goals and help them advance to the next round.

Prediction: Schalke 1-5 Real Madrid

FC Basel 1893 vs FC Porto

FC Basel

1st in Swiss Super League – 14-3-3 (6-3-1 home; 8-0-2 away)

    • Champions League: 5 games, 3 GA (1 home, 2 away), 3 clean sheets (1 home, 2 away), 4-1-0

This is a trap set of games for Porto. They are the better team, but Basel can do some good work on their home field. I look for Basel to take a close one at home but when the game is on Porto’s turf, watch out. Jackson Martinez is one of the most exciting strikers in Europe and he will have himself a banner game.

Prediction: Basel 2-4 Porto

  • Marc-Andre Ter Stegen:
    • Champions League: 6 games, 5 GA (2 home, 3 away), 3 clean sheets (1 home, 2 away), 5-0-1

With the highly touted front 3 of Barcelona (Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez), the biggest question going into the season was how long would it take for them to click. Well you can make the case that Barcelona is the hottest team in the world right now. They are clicking on all cylinders and are going up against a Manchester City team that has been 1-2-2 in its last 5 games. However, striker Sergio Aguero and midfielder David Silva will lead an offense looking to counter that machine. This will be exciting but I think Barcelona comes out on top.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-6 Barcelona

When you look at a team like Dortmund, you don’t picture a team that’s fighting for its life in the Bundesliga. You see a team filled with talent looking to be in the form they were in when they went to the Champions League finals in 2013. However, after injuries galore, they are in the relegation race. Now, they return superstar Marco Reus and he leads his team against the top team in Italy, home to one of the best young players in the world in Paul Pogba. These will be two exciting games and I think Juventus, led by their defense and goalie Buffon, win by road goals.

Prediction: Juventus 3-3 Dortmund (Juventus wins by road goals)

Goals will be at a premium in this series. Arsenal brings back midfielder Mesut Ozil from injury at just the right time. Alexis Sanchez, one of the best players in the world this season, will have his help around him just in time to face one of the best young defenses in France, led by Jeremy Toulalan. Expect games to be low scoring, but thanks to a lack of offense with Monaco, Arsenal will come out on top.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Monaco

Atletico Madrid had one of the most impressive performances possible in the group stage of the Champions League, not allowing a single goal after losing to Greek powerhouses Olympiakos 3-2. Mario Mandzukic, Antoine Griezmann, and Fernando Torres hope to jumpstart Atletico to the next round. On the other side, forwards Karim Bellarbi and Heung-Min Son run a Bayer offense looking to get a single shot past GK Moya, who hasn’t conceded a goal this entire tournament. Look for Atletico to continue their hot form and be one of 3 La Liga teams to advance to the next round.

Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 1-4 Atletico Madrid
